A Healthy Mouth Can Prevent HPV

Scientists at the University of Texas Health Science Center have discovered a link between oral health and HPV, the human papillomavirus. There is an inverse relationship between oral health and HPV contraction; the worse one’s oral health, the greater the chances of developing HPV.

Scientists had earlier determined a connection between oral health and cancers of the mouth and throat. Since HPV is one cause of those cancers, this new study confirms that brushing and flossing daily can prevent serious illness. More research is necessary to determine the specific way in which poor oral health increases susceptibility to cancer of the mouth.

The good news is that people who have been lax in caring for their teeth can reverse the effects of poor hygiene. By following a daily care plan provided by a dental hygienist, one can begin to improve their oral health.
