ADA rolls out new teeth whitening standards

Teeth whitening treatments using bleaching products are more common now than they have ever been. To ensure public safety, the American Dental Organization’s Standard Committee on Dental Products has formed a working group to draw up rules that teeth whitening products must follow. These rules cover areas such as the concentration of active ingredients in the products, restoration safety,

safety of soft tissue such as the gums, toxicity levels, clear instructions for use, and enamel safety standards to ensure that the teeth of people receiving the treatment are not softened or eroded.

These standards have been in the works for several years, and were formed with input from dental manufacturers, dental researchers, and other dental professionals. Teeth whitening treatments that do not meet this standard will not be able to receive the ADA Seal of Approval, and will not be considered fit for use by ADA members.
