What to Do in a Dental Emergency

In the case of a dental emergency, use the following first-aid procedures, then see your dentist as soon as possible.

Knocked-out adult tooth: Without touching the root, attempt to put the tooth back in the socket. If you cannot replace the tooth, put it in milk or between your cheek and gums.

Cracked tooth: Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to the face.

Toothaches: Rinse with warm water and gently floss.

Lip or tongue bite: Clean with water and apply a cold compress.

Object lodged in teeth: Try to gently remove with floss. Do not use pointed instruments.

To avoid dental emergencies occurring, take precautions ahead of time to protect your teeth. If you take part in athletics or sports, always wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth from injury. Do not chew on hard foods such as popcorn kernels, ice, or hard candy that can crack your teeth. Always avoid using your teeth to cut through packaging or open items.
